Why Material Type Matters

A cubic yard of bark mulch weighs 600 pounds. A cubic yard of road base weighs 2,900 pounds — nearly five times heavier. Converting between volume and weight without knowing the material density gives you a useless number. This converter uses the correct density for each product.

Common Questions

How many tons in a cubic yard of gravel?

It depends on the specific product. 3/4" crushed gravel runs about 1.35 US tons per cubic yard. Crusher run is slightly heavier at 1.40 tons. Pea gravel sits around 1.30 tons. Use the converter above for exact numbers.

What's the difference between a US ton and a metric tonne?

A US ton (short ton) is 2,000 pounds. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,204.62 pounds. A metric tonne is roughly 10% heavier than a US ton. In BC, suppliers may quote in either — always confirm which unit they're using.
